Visa extension for Hongkong  is very easy to get, he can extend his visa 3 months single entry (accommodation seal or renewal).

In this case, he should get the accommodation seal to stay, it would be cheaper and more economical.

After get extenstion visa and the date is exipired for next time, he can fly from Vietnam to Thailand and come back Vietnam, get new visa on arrival for 3 months or 6 months very cheap.
